Take the HELM: Expand or Relocate to Lower Manhattan


Take the HELM is a competition that recognizes innovative companies relocating to or expanding in Lower Manhattan.  Competition winners are awarded $250,000 and $50,000 for 4 runners-up.  

The competition is part of an initiative to diversify the Lower Manhattan economy and bring the best and brightest organizations and talent to the neighborhood, which has seen more than $30 billion in investment in the last decade.  The submission deadline is July 15th.  Apply now:

NYC School wins 2nd Place in NYS STEM Competition

NYC Schools 7th graders at PS/IS 276 in Manhattan won second place in New York State’s online STEM Competition called E-Cybermission.  The competition was a free, web-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics contest sponsored by the US Army.  

The students won for their experiment on eliminating bacteria in storms such as Hurricane Sandy.  They investigated the effect of different concentrations of ethyl alcohol on killing e-coli bacteria. Each student won a $500 US saving bond.

NYC BigApps Is Coming Soon

Move over Samsung – The Next Big Thing is almost here. We are working with CollabFinder to bring the biggest, boldest, and best BigApps ever! While we can’t divulge our secrets yet, yesterday we gave a sneak peek at Social Media Week event: “We Built this City: The State of Civic Technology, with Code for America and IDEO.”

Entering its fourth year, the NYC BigApps competition promotes government transparency and innovative new technologies by challenging mobile and web developers to create cool, free apps for New Yorkers using City data.

Reinvent Payphones: Submit Your Prototype by Monday, Feb 18

A quick reminder that the submission period for the Reinvent Payphones Design Challenge closes on Monday, February 18 at 9AM EST. Digital images, documentation, or links to a virtual presentation are all welcome.  Please be sure to submit one proposal per team, and please identify all team members by name and email in the fields marked.   All team members must complete the Participant Release Form ( to complete the submission package.  

The Competition Judges will select up to 15 teams to demo at Quirky headquarters on Tuesday, March 5, 2013.  Selected entrants will be notified by email by February 22, 2013.
