Designers and Developers, are you looking for something to do on National Day of Civic Hacking? 

On June 1st, there will be a Rockaway Beach Civic Hack Day at Scholars Academy in Rockaway Park. The hackathon will be themed around building tools and apps for emergency preparedness and response.  This includes developing tools for the community and government to collaborate on rebuilding after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy.  The event is run by Rockaway Help in sponsorship with Mozilla and The New York Community Trust.

NYC Schools 7th graders at PS/IS 276 in Manhattan won second place in New York State’s online STEM Competition called E-Cybermission.  The competition was a free, web-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics contest sponsored by the US Army.  

The students won for their experiment on eliminating bacteria in storms such as Hurricane Sandy.  They investigated the effect of different concentrations of ethyl alcohol on killing e-coli bacteria. Each student won a $500 US saving bond.

New York City is working on expanding and upgrading its mobile telecommunications network.  The Wireless Corridor Challenge RFP is looking for 2 consultants to design, launch, implement, manage and maintain a free, public access Wi-Fi or other emerging wireless corridor in a commercial district. The consultants will be awarded up to $300,000 to implement the network.  

The submission deadline is June 14th, 4pm.

Design to save lives by creating an interface for counselors to help teens in crisis through texting.

NYC students 18 and younger are invited to participate in a weekend long coding design challenge that the Museum of the Moving Image, along with the Hive NYC and the Young Rewired State, will be hosting on June 29-30th.  During the challenge, young people will be developing digital prototypes using open government data, working under the guidance of mentors who are professional programmers.

Facebook, The MacArthur Foundation, Mozilla and the Family and Online Safety Institute (FOSI) are hosting a hackathon where developers, designers, educators, programmers and learning innovators will develop social tools — apps, badges, curricula, and other prototypes — that help make for a better Web, and especially to make young people’s online experiences more civil, more empowering and more firmly under their own control. The day will culminate in a judged competition, and the best ideas will earn prizes totaling $48,000.
